A Multinational in the Book's Retail Business is looking for The Italian General Manager

Job Purpose

* To maximize profit of the Company Italy whilst minimising costs ensuring promotions are accurate and merchandised to the Company's standards.
* They will define the strategy for the Italian business. Implement actions agreed with their Line Manager.
* They will ensure the management team ( 3 x Store Managers, 2 x Buyers and 1 x Financial Controller) and the wider team are clear on the store targets and are motivated to achieve them
* They will be accountable for fully implementing policies to ensure the safety of all customers, staff and stock.
* They will be accountable for developing the image and brand of Company in Italy and they will be bilingual (Italian/English).
* They will represent the Company in all external communication, meetings and legal activity.


Key Accountabilities

Marketing the Brand

* Communicates the company brand and culture to both staff and customers
* Develops a coherent strategic plan and puts it into operation
* Sets and maintains excellent customer service
* Excellent retail standards
* Coordinates and exploits institutional sales
* Sets the Company merchandising strategy and develops new merchandise ranges
* Ensures the highest standards of display and presentation within the branch

People management (in agreement with Group HR- UK)

* To show a commitment to open communication
* Ensures there are sufficient staff to be able to serve the customers within the customer care guidelines and controls branch holiday and work rotas
* Defines staff pay policy (in agreement with Group HR) ensuring staff are paid regularly and any Italian social declarations and payments are made on time
* Implements the Company policy and procedures in areas of recruitment, training, development and performance
* Takes disciplinary action whenever required
* Defines branch training requirements and develops a training plan with the Assistant Managers
* Implements best practice for work planning to achieve productivity targets
* Holds regular meetings with staff delegates, unions and controls staff elections

Finance- (With support of Financial Controller)

* Maintains the security of cash within the premises
* Controls the bank signatures and ensures correct payment of suppliers, service partners and government departments
* Develops budgets, forecasts and monthly and year-end financial results
* Understands and complies to Italian tax regulations
* Develops capital budgets
* Ensures sufficient cash flow
* Follows the foreign exchange rates
* Controls year-end audits and ensures the validity of related financial stock information
* Ensures all statutory information conforms to Italiain law
* Managing accounts for the branches in Rome and Turin

Stock quality and EPOS

* Maximises the quality of the stock range and availability through the efficient exploitation of the stock database system
* Manages work routines to ensure all stock is on sale as quickly as possible
* Defines the retail price exchange rates for all products to protect margins
* Controls buying and returns activity to minimize stock depreciation
* Ensures there is sufficient promotional activity in all departments and remains within the Italian regulations for price promotion
* Controls the transport of stock and ensures all declarations for imports are made within European laws

Risk Management

* Implements Company security/safety policies and procedures
* Delegates correctly the responsibility for shop keys and ensures the timely opening and closing of the shop
* Reduces branch deficiencies to a minimum
* Ensures all security registers are up to date and French legal security requirements are met, in particular during any works
* Ensures there is valid insurance for people, stock and premises
* Responsible for maintaining a safe working environment and safe systems of work for staff, customers and visitors
* Ensures fire drills are conducted and recorded

* promoting the organisation locally by liaising with local schools, newspapers and the community in general;
* organising special promotions, displays and events;
* attending and chairing meetings, representing The Company in Italy;
* updating colleagues on business performance, new initiatives and other pertinent issues;
* touring the sales floor regularly, talking to colleagues and customers, and identifying or resolving urgent issues;
* maintaining awareness of market trends in the retail industry, understanding forthcoming customer initiatives and monitoring what local competitors are doing;
* initiating changes to improve the business, e.g. revising opening hours to ensure the store can compete effectively in the local market;
* co-ordinating Company _ UK departmental requirements and requests for information
* managing staff pay and social declarations for Italy Knowledge, skills and Experience
* Should be bilingual Italian/English
* Should have at least five years experience in a general management role in retail management
* Must have good knowledge of Italian employment , tax and fiscal law
* Should have some knowledge of the book market or associated merchandise
* Needs to possess excellent leadership qualities and the ability to be assertive when required but must also be able to work effectively and maturely as part of a management team.
* Needs to possess energy, drive and enthusiasm and should be a natural motivator
* Needs excellent inter-personal and communication skills encompassing patience, tact and diplomacy and showing a commitment to open communication
* Needs to have confidence in and commitment to on-going training and understanding of the coaching process
* Should be able to give and receive constructive and consistent feedback
* Should understand and be committed to the role of Team Manager, and should particularly recognise and respond to the training potential it offers
* Should have good organisational and analytical skills, and be able to offer sound and reasoned judgement.
